Not Much Blogging

March 16, 2010
You may have noticed that I've not done much blogging since I re-started my personal blog. It's not my top priority and besides, I have an additional excuse: taxes. I do my own and it's a ton of work, not leaving enough time to get to everything else. I will. Soon. Promise.

The Last Blog Entry

March 30, 2009
I've given this a fair trial, but I think I'm better off using a single blog. This will be my last blog entry here, but I will remain active on my Thinking Things Through blog. Part of the reason concerns my experiences with the Opera Web browser, which I will be chronicling in TTT. Another reason is the effort to maintain two blogs instead of one consolidated blog. In any event, this is history.

Tipnut

March 29, 2009
You can waste a lot of time prowling the Web, so you might as well look at something useful. Tipnut.com is a site that contains a lot of useful information about the more mundane aspects of life!

Google Docs

March 27, 2009
There have been some nice updates to Google Docs, which means I have to update my comparison of Google's tools to Zoho. The change I like in Google Docs is the ability to produce simple drawings - it's quite a nifty implementation. It's not a capability I think I'd use very often, but it's nice to know that it's there.

Zoho Planner

March 19, 2009
Zoho Planner is one of those Web tools I just haven't been able to get my head around. I tried it for a while (a couple of years ago) but it seemed to be more trouble than it was worth. I use an old fashioned system to keep track of things - a digital version of my ancient pen and paper technique developed decades ago.

But now I'm wondering. I keep reading rave reviews of Planner and wonder what I'm missing. One feature that I never used was the integration between Planner and e-mail. Planner...

Publishing with Zoho

March 8, 2009
Zoho has made such great improvements in Zoho Writer that I've adopted it as my word processor of choice. Moreover, I've decided to use it as my publishing platform for "long form" pieces. That's been a tough decision: I've used Zoho Writer, Google Docs, Google Sites, Wordpress, and manual web placement for hosting longer pieces. The result is a confusing (for me) and ugly (for you) mess. I now plan to consolidate with Zoho. I will gradually convert all of the old stuff - one more thing for m...

Google Gears

March 6, 2009
I've been waiting to try Google Gears and I've finally gotten around to it. In case you don't know, Google Gears accelerates data onto your desktop. Multiple applications like Google Docs, Gmail, Zoho Writer, and Wordpress all support Gears. It's supposed to be faster and allow you to work in offline mode (handy for traveling). I've installed Gears and when I've had some experience with it, I'll add it to my Tools page.

Updating At Last

March 5, 2009
I'm finally freeing up some time to start updating the content of this Web site. You might check out the Tools section. In documenting the photo management tools, I was struck by the problem posed by multiple photo hosting sites. I have my older photos in Photobucket and my newer ones in Picasa Web albums. That's a pain if you are looking for some particular photo. To make matters worse, I've neglected the Photobucket site for a long time. It needs some maintenance. Sigh. Something to add to ...

Web Goodies

March 1, 2009
This isn't going as fast as I had hoped, but we can only do what we can. The big transformation of this site is ahead of me - taking on the Tools section. I hope to capture information about some of the great free services on the Web.

The problem is that new goodies seem to pop up faster than I can analyze them. The business model behind all these goodies is fascinating. They either support themselves with advertising or with premium services that only a tiny fraction of users actually buy.

Getting Started

February 19, 2009
My online revision is now starting in earnest, but it may be slower than I expected. I forgot that it was about time to start working on taxes, which is real time killer.

Part of my dissatisfaction with my Web presence comes from having stuff sprayed all over the Web. It's ugly and hard to manage. So everything's going to end up here or in my Thinking Things Through site. The rule for dividing will be the type of content. TTT will get everything about economics, politics, and other serious top...
