Whatever crosses my mind.

The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission had penetrated, to an uncomfortable degree, the shallow defenses Greenspan has dreamt up to justify his indefensible behavior. For instance, he offered a ridiculous response when asked if monetary policy was one failure during his tenure. Greenspan changed the subject, only — one suspects to Greenspan’s surprise — to be asked the same question again. He again ran off on a tangent. Maybe even Greenspan understood the emperor who wore no clothes had been exposed.

Bureaucracy is a credential-based system. A PhD or Juris Doctor is the modern equivalent of an earldom or a knighthood. Mere possession of a credential is sufficient to establish one’s credibility on a subject — even if the subject isn’t directly related to the credential.

David Freddoso makes a good point: there has been much hilarity over the claim by an Iranian ayatollah that extramarital sex causes earthquakes. Here in the West, though, some give credence to an equally faith-based explanation: earthquakes are caused by global warming! Religious faith is a fine thing, but now, as always, there is no shortage of false prophets.

Yes, there are many fine people in the business who do put their clients’ interests before their own. But so what. Do I wish that ethics were better? Of course. But don’t be surprised when in a world where people lie awake at night thinking about how to make more money, some very big players lose money in a deal.

Reality check: Every airline charges for its overhead bins, just as every airline charges for bathrooms, oxygen masks, and flight attendants. The cost of those amenities is built into the fare you pay when you fly, and you pay whether you use them or not. The same used to be true of the “free’’ meals, pillows, and baggage handling airlines provided, before they unbundled those services, made them optional, and began charging for them separately. Spirit, an ultra-low cost carrier that describes itself as “the unbundling leader in the industry,’’ has decided to do the same for carry-on luggage, simultaneously reducing its base fares by $40 or more each way.

Seeing our political divisions as a battle between the culture of dependence and the culture of independence helps to make sense of the divisions seen in the 2008 election.

Wall Street has supported Democrats two-to-one over Republicans in recent campaign cycles. This, perhaps, is the payoff the Street has been waiting for.

The so-called “financial reform” reminds me of B'rer Rabbit.
